A strong contender for the best album Kevin Ayers ever released; certainly his most commercial and approachable.

He had made 3 albums for Island Records with mixed results, but now in 1976 he was back “home” on EMI’s Harvest label for whom he has recorded between 1969 and 1973.

This album features strong musicianship and production allied to great songs, and would be an excellent starting point for anyone coming to his career for the first time.

It opens with two very strong and similarly paced rock songs, “Star” and “The Owl”, settling the tone for breezy melodic songs which are the cornerstone of this record. His cover of the 1930’s standard “Falling In Love Again ” is playful, knowing, and oozing charm-shame it wasn’t a hit, and if you prefer more sombre deeper fare, then look no further than the stark piano ballad “Yes I Do” and album closer “Blue” with male voice choir backing.

More lighted moments can be found with “The Ballad of Mr. Snake” and “Mr.Cool”, typically whimsical both lyrically and musically.

All in all a first rate album, and perhaps his last truly great work.

      Hello Tim
Thank you for posting this review of ‘Yes We Have No Mañanas’ by Kevin Ayers. I think that most Ayers fans would largely agree with your comments. It’s a wonderful album which really showcases the more “pop” side of Kevin’s songwriting talent. Perhaps the next truly great album he released was his final outing ‘The Unfairground’ although 1992’s ‘Still Life With Guitar’ had some excellent songs too.
PS I’m sorry we have taken so long to get back to you. The COVID-19 pandemic, a great deal of home schooling and a very long summer holiday has wiped out most of our leisure time during 2020!!
